Concentrated mixed-use development is proposed along the Lougheed
corridor (1), where “trolley-scaled” light rail (2), dense tree
plantings, and a narrowed right-of-way contribute to the pedestrian
character of the street. Brentwood Mall (3) has been retrofitted
to accommodate a farmer’s market (4), offices, and a hotel (5).
A secondary shopping street is envisioned along Buchanan Street
(6), just north of Lougheed Highway (7). South of Lougheed Highway
are residential neighbourhoods of four-storey rowhouses (8),
which are integrated through central community gardens (9) and
through-block pedestrian paths (10). The north and south edges
of the site are embraced by large areas of green space (11)
that act both as transition zones and important ecological links
to the community. The cemetery (12) to the north has been enhanced
by additional tree species, while to the south a system of open
spaces and interpretive trails (13) around the Still Creek corridor
(14) provides a protective buffer as well as physical and social
links to the surrounding community.
