A
dense agglomeration of building types and forms lines the
Lougheed corridor. The town centre is announced by the presence
of civic buildings, which surround a series of outdoor public
spaces.
Detail
showing the town core at the intersection of Lougheed Highway
and Willingdon Avenue. North of Lougheed Highway, civic buildings,
such as a town hall, community centre, library, and firehall,
are clustered around distinct urban open spaces. The civic
function of these spaces is supported and enhanced by concentrations
of commercial/retail uses and high-density housing, both of
which are proposed along the contiguous routes of Lougheed
Highway and the northeastern spine of Buchanan Street. Light
rail transit is placed centrally and at-grade along Lougheed
Highway, with the primary transit station straddling the intersection.
Given this kind of prominence, transit becomes a vital component
of the street.
