SUSTAINABLE URBAN LANDSCAPES

The following drawings show the conceptual evolution of Team One’s proposal.

The primary north-south routes form green spines that connect the Still Creek sub-watershed northwards to the town core. The grid framework links this ecological system throughout the community.

The second drawing suggests how water is integrated into the basic grid framework. The site’s sloping topography provides an obvious cue for reintroducing natural hydrological patterns and for incorporating the concepts of natural drainage and water management into the everyday workings of the community.

The third drawing shows a more refined community open-space structure taking shape around a 300-by-600 foot grid. The circles represent a 400-metre walking radius. The beginning of a green heart is depicted at the point where the Still Creek corridor intersects the centre of the site.

The fourth sketch reveals the land use structure, and the grid is further articulated by the introduction of a system of green links that intersect the grid at mid-block, providing connections to the surrounding open space.
